Pita Bread is a soft, slightly leavened flat bread made from wheat flour. It is a staple of Middle Eastern cuisine. Pita Bread can be used to wrap kebabs or Falafel and also served with sauces or dips such as Hummus, Roasted Red Pepper Hummus and Baba Ganoush.
It can also be cut and baked into crispy pita chips. I love to bake them at home as they are super easy . You can either bake them in the oven or on the stove top. Both the methods work equally well. You can make them well in advance as they store well wrapped in kitchen towel.
Yield: 8 to 10
Prep time: 1 hour and 30 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Ingredients for Pita Bread
2 teaspoon active dry yeast
½ teaspoon sugar
1 cup warm water
2 cups maida (all-purposed flour)
1 cup aata (whole wheat flour)
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoon olive oil
Directions for Pita Bread
- In a bowl mix 1 cup lukewarm water, yeast and sugar. Stir to dissolve. Add 1 teaspoon flour and mix. Put bowl in a warm place, until mixture is frothy. (About 15 minutes)
- In a large mixing bowl, place the plain flour, whole wheat flour, salt, 1 tablespoon olive oil and mix.
- Now add the yeast mix and knead the dough well, for roughly 2 minutes.
- Add rest of olive oil and kneed lightly for 2 more minutes or until smooth. Cover and rest it in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubles.
- Heat oven to 220 degrees celcius.
- Punch down the dough and divide into 8 to 10 portion of equal size and form into balls.
- Roll each ball into 6-inch circles, dusting with flour if necessary. Leave these rounds covered with a damp cloth for 10 minutes.
- Place 2 to 3 at a time on a wire rack. After 4 minutes the dough should be nicely puffed. The pita should be pale, with only a few brown speckles.
- Transfer warm pita to a napkin-lined basket and cover them to keep the bread soft.
- Continue baking the remaining breads
- Cut pita breads into half and fill as desired.
Note: You can make pita with only plain flour or only whole wheat flour also.
